The Snail – 1953, Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse was a pioneering French artist and a leading figure in modern art, known for making colourful works of art. Matisse developed his famous cut-out technique in the late 1930s, and The Snail from 1953 is one of his best-known works. He arranged painted paper shapes into a spiral, using bold colours to create a striking, vibrant artwork.

Maman – 1999, Louise Bourgeois

Louise Bourgeois was a French-American artist known for her sculptures exploring memory, the body, and the unconscious. Maman is a monumental bronze spider sculpture, representing the strength and fragility of Bourgeois's mother. This was the first work to greet visitors when Tate Modern opened in 2000 and has now returned to the Turbine Hall after 25 years.

Tate Modern Architecture – 2015, Peter Saville

Peter Saville is a British graphic artist well known for his innovative and influential album cover designs. In 2015, Saville was commissioned by Tate to create a graphic response to Tate Modern's evolving architecture ahead of the opening of the new Tate Modern in 2016. Using transparency and colour, he captured the dynamic relationship between the gallery’s interconnected spaces and expansion.

Self-Portrait - 1967, Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was a key figure in Pop Art, known for exploring consumerism, celebrity culture, and mass production in his work. Self-Portrait is part of a series using the same photo, where Warhol used his signature silkscreen technique to create a striking, repetitive design.

Lobster Telephone – 1938, Salvador Dali

Salvador Dalí was a Spanish surrealist known for his eccentric and dreamlike artworks. Lobster Telephone is a surrealist masterpiece that combines a lobster with a telephone. This artwork explores how an unusual pairing of unexpected objects can reveal hidden desires from the unconscious mind.

Man Pointing - 1947, Alberto Giacometti

Alberto Giacometti was a Swiss sculptor and painter, renowned for his elongated figures. Man Pointing was made for the artist’s first New York exhibition in 1948. He recalled feverishly completing it in one night. Originally intended as part of a two-figure composition, he abandoned this idea, considering Man Pointing a complete work.

Delivery Dancer’s Sphere – 2022, Ayoung Kim

Ayoung Kim is a South Korean artist synthesising hybrid narratives across media such as moving image, video, installation, VR, game simulation and performance. Delivery Dancer’s Sphere examines the gig economy and platform labour through the story of a female delivery rider, Ernst Mo. The work mixes imagined stories with themes of power, technology, and mythology.

Babel – 2001, Cildo Meireles

Cildo Meireles is a Brazilian artist whose work often explores scale, ranging from a tiny cube the size of a fingernail to large scale installations which fill entire rooms. Babel is a sculptural installation of stacked radios tuned to different stations, creating immense jumbles of sound. Referencing the biblical Tower of Babel, it explores themes of communication breakdown, information overload, and cultural division.

The Echo of an Ancient Form of Knowledge - 2021, Edgar Calel

Edgar Calel is a Maya-Kaqchikel artist based in Guatemala known for exploring themes of identity, memory, and indigenous culture. The Echo of an Ancient Form of Knowledge by Edgar Calel is an installation featuring fruits and vegetables placed on rocks, acting as altars to the artist’s ancestors. The work invokes Mayan spiritual practices, honouring ancestral knowledge and highlighting threats faced by indigenous communities.

Dearest Art Collector – 1986, Guerilla Girls

The Guerrilla Girls are a feminist group that use art and humour to expose sexism, racism & corruption in art, politics & culture. Dearest Art Collector is a poster critiquing gender disparities in the art world, while using irreverently playful, handwritten imagery and text that calls for the inclusion of more women in art collections.

Reborn Sounds of Childhood – 1961-5, Ibrahim El-Salahi

Reborn Sounds of Childhood Dreams I – 1961-5, Ibrahim El-Salahi

Ibrahim El-Salahi is a Sudanese artist known for combining Arabic and African forms, exploring themes of memory, spirituality, and identity. Reborn Sounds of Childhood Dreams merges childhood memories with spiritual and social awareness. Using bold lines and a limited colour palette, El-Salahi combines African, Arabic, and Islamic symbols to show the connection between past and present.

Prague – 1968, Josef Koudelka

Josef Koudelka is a Czech-French photographer renowned for his ability to capture the essence of human spirit amidst times of upheaval. Koudelka often captures the raw emotion and resilience of people and communities through his work, creating powerful visual narratives that reflect both turmoil and hope.

Bat Opera 33 – 2008, Monster Chetwynd

Monster Chetwynd is a British artist whose practice encompasses interactive performances, film, collage, painting, and installation. Monster Chetwynd’s work blends folk tradition, pop culture, and surrealism, in a playful and rebellious style. Monster often creates vibrant pieces using handmade materials, emphasising collaboration in the creative process.

Machine No. 6 – 1967, Shinkichi Tajiri

Shinkichi Tajiri was a Japanese-American sculptor known for exploring technology, transformation, and humanity. Shinkichi Tajiri’s Machines series explores the role of technology, and the significant resources invested in it. As a Post-War artist, he sought to create universal art that goes beyond borders in response to global devastation.

In Search of Vanished Blood – 2012, Nalani Malani

Nalini Malani is a trailblazing multimedia artist from India known for exploring identity, memory, and trauma. In Search of Vanished Blood is an immersive installation that combines reverse paintings on rotating cylinders, video, shadow play, and a compelling soundscape. It reimagines the story of Cassandra – cursed with the gift of prophecy – to reflect on the fatal position of women and the failure of human communication.

Tate Modern Architecture

Designed by UNIQLO, this T-shirt celebrates 25 years of Tate Modern with a bold, geometric reinterpretation of the iconic building. The angular line design draws directly from the sharp, sculptural edges of the gallery’s architecture - simplified into a clean, modern graphic that reflects Tate Modern’s unique presence on the London skyline.
